Dysphagia (swallow)

What is it?

Dysphagia is the medical term for difficulty swallowing. It can include problems difficulty controlling food or drink in the mouth, difficulty chewing, or trouble initiating the swallow, and can result in food getting stuck in throat or going the wrong way into the lungs. In some instances dysphagia can be life threatening.

Dysarthria (speech)

What is it?

Dysarthria is a speech disorder caused by muscle weakness. It can make it difficult for people to understand what you are trying to say because your speech may sound slurred. It can also result in difficulty maintaining appropriate volume, changing volume or pitch, and the speed at which you talk.

Speakout! Therapy Program

What is it?

Speakout! is an evidence based therapy program for people with parkinson’s disease (and related disorders). it helps regain and maintain function of speech and swallowing skills.

this is an intensive program and requires the participant to commit to twice daily practice for 4 weeks, then daily practice therafter.

Social Communication

What is it?

Social communication is a broad term that describes how we use verbal and non-verbal communication in social situations.

It can includes things like:

Difficulties with social communcation are very common in people with autism specturm disorder.

Augmentative & alternative communication (AAC)

What is it?

Aac are communication devices, systems, strategies and tools the replace or support spoken language.

Augmentative communication adds something to your speech to make you message clearer. Think sign language, or pictures.

Alternative communication is finding a different way to communication becasue you are unable to speak, or you can’t be understood by others.
This could include symbol or picture boards, communication books, speech generating devices, aac apps.
Alternative communication ranges from very basic to complex systems depending on the needs of the person.
